We live in a grand, lovingly updated Victorian home in Alameda, CA. The house has six bedrooms and six bathrooms, and its renovated spaces include additional soundproofing so every resident enjoys genuine privacy and quiet — the best of communal living without sacrificing peace.
Our shared spaces are extraordinary. Indoors: a professional chef's kitchen with breakfast area, formal dining room, living room, library, craft room, first- and second-floor offices, a meditation room that doubles as a guest room, an upstairs laundry, and a basement event space complete with lounge, bar, and great room with its own private entrance. The house also runs on super high-speed internet, with smart home features and automations expanding steadily to add convenience and save money.
Outside, the property is a world of its own:
Democratically
Decisions that affect the household are made together. We hold regular meetings, everyone has a voice, and we work toward consensus. No one holds authority over another — we govern our home the way we'd want to be governed.
With Clear Ownership
Each member chooses an area of household responsibility to truly steward — not just occasionally help with. From the kitchen to finances to cultural life, our home runs smoothly because each domain has someone who genuinely cares about it.
With Emotional Presence
We show up for each other. Life brings hard moments, and we don't expect anyone to navigate them alone. Support here isn't performative — it's woven into how we relate to one another day to day.
With Respect for Autonomy
Community doesn't mean uniformity. We encourage each other to pursue individual goals, relationships, and identities without judgment. You don't give up your life here — you get to live it more fully.
We believe housing costs should be fair and transparent. Our rent is calculated annually based on the previous year's actual household expenses — utilities, maintenance, mortgage, and all shared costs — adjusted for expected inflation going forward.
There are no hidden markups, no surprises, and no one profiting from the arrangement. When costs go down, rent goes down. Everyone sees the numbers.
We genuinely enjoy each other's company — and we make time for it. As a household, we regularly attend concerts, cultural events, festivals, and performances. We travel together. We take on house projects side by side. The shared experiences are part of what makes this a community rather than just a convenient living arrangement.
Participation in household activities is always encouraged, never mandatory. Your time is your own, and we mean that.
